ITU Regional Forum for the Arab Region on IMT Systems: Technology, Evolution and Implementation

On 9th May the ITU closed its Regional Forum for Arab Region on IMT Systems: Technology, Evolution and Implementation which was held in Tunis, Tunisia at the kind invitation of Tunisie Telecom.

The forum started on 7th May in the presence of H.E. Mr. Mongi Marzouk, Minister of ICT Tunisia,  the CEO of Tunisie Telecom Mr. Mokhtar Mnakri, and the regional representative of the ITU-BDT Cairo, Ms. Rouda Alamir Ali.

Participation in this Forum was opened to ITU Member States, Sector Members and Associates, as well as to any individual from an ITU Member State wishing to contribute to the work of the Forum. Academia and associated institutions were also welcome.

The Forum provided an opportunity for senior or mid-level managers of mobile network operators or mobile virtual network operators, analysts and investors examining IMT markets and opportunities, telecommunication regulators, and equipment and technology vendors to share their knowledge, experiences and views on the future of the industry.

The Forum was designed to address the needs of investors, operators, service providers and related businesses considering or planning their entry into the IMT mobile broadband market.

The Forum provided a vision of IMT as a new mobile broadband business, its key differentiators and challenges, both from a technical and commercial perspective. It also gave an overview and an update on the status of the IMT industry and of its trends.

The sessions addressed the following topics: IMT Global Status Report; research activities on technologies for future mobile communications in the Arab Region; IMT business & market forecasts; views on mobile and wireless communications for 2020 society; and IMT networks frequencies and spectrum.

The high level of speakers and the number of participants (200+), the interest demonstrated during all sessions, in addition to the good level organization  have made the event a big success.

The presence and active participation of Ms. Lobna Smida, a handicapped young women who questioned about the technological advances of mobile broadband for the disabled has to be highlighted as a salient point of the Forum.

The final panel discussions have generated several outcomes and recommendation for “Fostering the development of Broadband Mobile in the ARB Region”. The final list of outcomes and recommendations are posted on the web where also all presentations and information have been continuously uploaded in real time during the duration of Forum.
